Jiaogulan has been identified as a potent anti-obesity agent with no adverse effects. In a study involving 80 obese participants, half of them took the herb, while the other half was on placebo. The results showed a significant decrease in total abdominal fat area, body weight, body fat mass, and BMI in those who took the herb.
Jiaogulan may have body composition effects, according to a study.1 Researchers gave either 450 milligrams (mg) of a commercial jiaogulan extract called ActivAMP or a placebo treatment daily to 117 people assigned male or female at birth who were overweight.
At the end of 16 weeks, the jiaogulan group showed a significant reduction in total body weight, body mass index (BMI), and total fat mass compared to the placebo group. And interestingly, differences were observed between people assigned male or female at birth. People assigned male at birth who took jiaogulan had significant decreases in visceral fat, which develops around internal organs inside the abdomen, while people assigned female at birth had reductions in gynoid fat, which forms around the hips, thighs, and breasts.The scientists say their work supports earlier studies that found body composition changes for people taking the herb.
Jiaogulan, known as the Immortality Herb or Gynostemma Pentaphyllum, is a climbing vine that can be found through Asia. Jiaogulan supplements are thought to have powerful adaptogen and antioxidant properties providing a number of metabolic benefits.

How it helped:
I have been plagued with severe anxiety and anger for months. I took kava kava for the worst episodes, but that can’t be taken long term and has only short term affects so I kept searching. I should say I tend to know asap when something does or doesn’t work for my system, so I’d expect for most people it might take longer to notice the effects- taking it on a regular daily basis for a few weeks should show improvement though.
Perhaps it works best for certain body types as well? So if you’re like me: tend to be a worrier, your body gets cold fast, and have a high metabolism, it may be just the thing! Also, So if you’ve tried that remedy and it didn’t work for you- or you’re often diagnosed by your acupuncturist with high yang and liver/ spleen deficiency, this might work well for you too.

I can say it definitely helps with endurance. I noticed it immediately upon taking prior to 2 hour bike rides. The recovery time afterwards is also shortened. I bought it in part to lose weight . Its too early to tell as Ive only taken it for a couple of weeks. But if its making itself known by helping with energy levels during the day or during exercise, than I must say its possible that it is having effect on other areas this herb is known for. Mixes very well with coffee and the taste is barely noticeable. But the taste is not bad or bitter anyway.

I was surprised to find this supplement came in a ziplock bag and not in tea bags, which makes it so much more versatile. I found it surprisingly non bitter and has a rather vegetable flavor to it that is easily hidden in food, tea, and smoothies, which I have tried it in all three. I prefer it in the smoothie and in hot water with honey as a tea. I find it seems to suit what I am needing. In the morning it’s a great pick me up in my smoothie, in the evening it seems to relax me in my tea.

Jiaogulan has been very well documented as one of the most powerful antioxidants on earth. I take this as part of my daily regimen to control free radical cell growth and lower my blood pressure. It does not in itself offer complete relief for high level hypertension, but it does bring it down a couple points.I add this with Organic Kyolic BP 109, Mercola L-Arginine, QoQ10, Gaia Olive Leaf Extract, Oil of Oregano.
