Main Functions:
Lutein is a xanthophyll, or an oxygen-containing carotenoid. Carotenoids are responsible for the naturally occurring yellow, orange, and red pigments found in foods. They are considered an essential nutrient — since our bodies can’t make them, we must get them through food.There are two types of carotenoids. Xanthophylls, which contain oxygen and usually contribute to yellow pigments, and carotenes, which don’t contain oxygen and tend to contribute to orange pigments.
Lutein is found in the retina of the eye, along with another xanthophyll, zeaxanthin. Because these carotenoids are found concentrated in the back of the eye, they are known as macular pigments and may be beneficial for eye health.
Lutein has antioxidant properties that may also play a role in cognitive function, heart health, and the prevention of some cancers.
Eye Health
The Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) is an often-cited study on lutein and eye health. Researchers looked at specific formulations of supplements and their impact on age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
A supplement containing lutein and zeaxanthin reduced the occurrence of advanced AMD by 25% over 5 years in people who already had AMD. In people without AMD, the supplement did not prevent or treat the condition.
Beta carotene, another carotenoid linked to eye health, was originally used in the supplement but was found to increase the risk of lung cancer in people who smoke.
Swapping out beta carotene for lutein and zeaxanthin was just as beneficial for eye health and did not increase lung cancer risk.
Another eye-health plus for lutein is that it’s an antioxidant. Inflammation and oxidative stress are related to eye conditions such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration.
Lutein has antioxidant properties, and studies have found it to be significantly effective in the prevention of these eye conditions.
Additionally, research suggests that lutein is important for babies’ eye development during pregnancy and for vision throughout their lifespan.
Cancer
Lutein, along with other carotenoids, may improve cancer prognosis.
One study found that a high intake of lutein, along with other nutrients found in fruits and vegetables, was associated with a decreased risk of pancreatic cancer.
Additionally, lutein, along with other carotenoids, may be protective against breast cancer as well as head and neck cancer.
Lutein, especially when taken in combination with other carotenoids such as zeaxanthin and beta-carotene, helps to protect against the oxidative damage and inflammation associated with cancer. Some studies suggest that people with higher dietary intakes of lutein have less risk of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system. Other research links lutein and other carotenoids with a lower incidence of breast, colon, and other cancers.
Overall, research on lutein and its benefits relating to cancer is promising.
Supplements
Because lutein is fat-soluble, your body will absorb it best when you eat it with other foods, particularly foods containing fat. However, if you prefer, lutein is available in supplement form, often in conjunction with zeaxanthin or as a part of the AREDS-2 formulation for eye health.
A typical diet contains 1–3 mg of lutein per day, but most benefits have been shown at 6 mg per day, which can be achieved through consuming food sources of lutein .
Most supplements contain 20 mg or more, which is much higher than the amount needed to get the benefits of lutein. However, most studies on lutein have used doses from 10–40 mg per day and have not found any adverse effects.

Lutein is categorized as Generally Regarded as Safe (GRAS), meaning that research has not found a significant link between regular lutein consumption and adverse side effects.

I began using the Lutein at the recommended dosage, but i was not seeing much change after 2-3 weeks. After reading a review here that someone used TWICE the recommended dosage and was having results i gave that a try. I took 800mg 1/day. And it worked at that dosage for me! I started having less eye strain and tired eyes.
I am in front of a computer screen for most of a day and this truly helps with eye strain for me.
I also started using saffron as well for the dryness and that helped me too. I started this about a month after i was seeing results from the Lutein.
This is my second order of Lutein in powder form, it seems to work better that the capsules i have found in other stores. I will continue using this product!

I am trying this for my eye health, never needing glasses till the ‘over forty beginning to need reading glasses’ happened, now with a minor distance correction also. I feel honored to write a review on the Pure Lutein 5% Powder, Carotenoid … IT’s Great just like all of Bulk Supplement Items I have only been using a couple of day and when I wake up ( I work third) I usually have a blurry film over my left eye and it take hours to remove it and sometime it wont go completely away to day I woke up and my vision was so clear not rubbing or straining at all well may be 15% here and there a lil but nothing like usual and that will probable go away in time much less strain than usual …My eye are clearer at work I use machines all night so I read words and write a lot again I didn’t strain near as much as usual hopefully it just keeps better and better in the future thank you so much for great fresh products at a great Price !!!! I’ve used Lutein for years, to prevent macular degeneration. It is sadly underdosed in many store-bought formulas, even some of the proclaimed AREDS formulas. Taking matters into my own hands, I will use 911healty powder, sourced from Marigold, and cap up my own Lutein. I have little doubt about this product, as it is readily available in grown commercially in numerous places, and being able to titrate the dosage for effect over the long run is in my own best interests.
And another thing, the AREDS 1 and 2 studies are fairly conclusive with respect to the use of Lutein and the correct dose range for efficacy. Certainly worth reading for anyone who wishes to help their aging parents – or themselves – with offsetting current or future potential macular degeneration, among all the other notable indications in the literature. I am taking the Lutein for my macular degeneration. This is the best form with the highest concentration on the market. If you need to take an eye supplement this is the way to get a Big Bang for your supplement dollar. I mix it with a tablespoon of yogurt and it is done. As always. you can order many supplement here in large package with reasonable price, sometimes only fractions of in bottle package. When I open the bag (well sealed), I notice it has very nice golden-yellow color – typical of Lutein’s color. It tastes not biter at all which make me relaxed. Only suggestion I can give to future buyers – transfer all lutein power into a good bottle to keep it from light and air in order to keep it a longer shelf life, the bag is good but you have to seal it carefully every time.
