What is rutin?
Rutin is a bioflavonoid, or plant pigment, that is found in certain vegetables and fruits. Apples are full of rutin. Buckwheat, most citrus, figs, and both black and green tea also contain rutin.
Rutin has powerful antioxidant properties. It also helps your body produce collagen and use vitamin C. You can add rutin to your diet by eating foods that contain it or taking it in supplement form.
Although there are no U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines for use of rutin due to lack of research, this bioflavonoid is commonly used medicinally. It’s included in more than 130 registered therapeutic medicinal preparationsTrusted Source. It’s also thought to have a number of health benefits.

Signs You May Need Rutin
Most of the signs that you may benefit from rutin involve the circulatory system, especially the veins. Varicose veins in the legs and hemorrhoids are the strongest indication that rutin can help you. Additional conditions that may mean you need rutin include chronic venous insufficiency, in which the veins have difficulty in returning blood to the heart. You may also benefit from rutin if you have spider veins.
How It Works (Mechanisms)
Rutin is not an especially large flavonoid, but specific parts of its molecule interact with different systems in the body, such as the brain, heart, or blood vessels.

Relieves Arthritis Symptoms
Studies show that this antioxidant has the power to inhibit acute and chronic inflammation. That makes it a potential natural treatment for arthritis. Researchers in Russia found that rutin was able to reduce the overproduction of free radicals in rheumatoid arthritis. They concluded it can be considered a useful supporting pharmaceutical agent.
Additionally, a 2017 lab study published in Pharmacology found that rutin improved the formation of tissue over the joint’s surface, improved cartilage and bone erosion, and reduced inflammation. This suggests that it has a protective effect against rheumatoid arthritis.
Vitamin C support
Rutin may work with vitamin C to enhance its effects, especially maintaining eye health and function.
Blood Vessel Health
Different studies have assessed rutin’s role in conditions affecting the blood vessels, including chronic venous insufficiency and varicose veins.
Chronic Venous Insufficiency
Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a condition that affects the venous systems in the lower limbs. In CVI, the venous valves in the legs are not working correctly, causing blood to flow back downward and pool in the veins. This can cause leg discomfort, heaviness, cramps, and pain.
A systematic review published in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics in 2015 concluded that a partially synthetic derivative of rutin called hydroxyethylrutosides moderately improved symptoms of CVI.
Pregnancy can increase the risk of developing varicose veins, which occurs when the valves inside the veins weaken. As a result, the veins become enlarged and dark in appearance.
A report in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews indicated that rutoside (a compound found in rutin) might help relieve the symptoms of varicose veins in late pregnancy. However, the study only included 69 women.
Prevents Blood Clots
Investigators at Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center found that rutin may serve as a novel strategy for preventing thrombosis. Thrombosis is when a blood clot forms in an artery or vein. Deep vein thrombosis is particularly dangerous because it can cause life-threatening complications, such as strokes and heart attacks.
Researchers found that rutin inhibits protein disulfide isomerase (PDI), which is rapidly secreted from our platelets and endothelial cells during thrombosis. By blocking the secretion of PDI, the antioxidant proved to block thrombosis.
Not only does it inhibit PDI, but it also prevents the compound from entering cells. Researchers found that it helped prevent blood clots in both arteries and veins, and it’s said to be the only agent that can prevent both types of clots.
In traditional medicine, rutin is known for its ability to strengthen blood vessels and improve circulation. It is used to reduce the appearance of varicose veins, relieve hemorrhoids and prevent hemorrhagic strokes that are caused by broken veins or arteries.
A review published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences indicates that rutin preparations were reported to significantly reduce leg swelling, relieve leg pain, and reduce leg cramps, heaviness and itching. This is likely due to its ability to reduce inflammation and improve blood circulation.
For example, rutin contains two bound sugar molecules, which enhance its antioxidant effects on the brain.
Overall, rutin acts by:
Protecting brain cells from damage
Blocking inflammatory enzymes (phospholipase A2), similar to corticosteroids but without the side effects
Reducing oxidative stress and free radicals
Safely lowering high blood pressure, affecting similar pathways as drugs used for high blood pressure (blocks ACE)
Boosting acetylcholine (by clocking the enzyme that degrades it, AChE)
Binding to and neutralizing toxic compounds that build up in the body if exposed to radiation
Relaxing blood vessels
